ORGANIZATIONORGANIZATION: The 19th century Indian saint Sri Ramakrishna showed that by worshipping the divine mother goddess “KALI”, one could achieve the ultimate objective of life by HER grace. Swami Vivekananda [a deciple of Sri Ramakrishna], established the Ramakrishna order of monks at the end of the 19th century, whose mission was to provide “SERVICE” towards humanity. There are “Ramakrishna Mission” all over in India as well as in most of the countries of the world, including over a dozen in the USA and one in Toronto. In abroad, the monks of this order provide the spiritual discourses not only to the members of centers but also to other communities and the organizations, if invited.The Vedanta Society of Calgary was formed in 1973 through the encouragement of one of the monk from this Mission. The Vedanta society of Calgary is a non-profit charitable organization whose membership is open to anyone irrespective of race or religion. Since its inception in 1973, the society has raised funds,donated books and reading materials to the University of Calgary and to establish a graduate scholarship for the students of The Religious Studies department.The Society also funded many International Development projects with matching funds from the Wild Rose Foundation of Alberta in several parts of India. Meetings: The Vedanta Society meets regularly on every 1st. and 3rd. SUNDAYS of each month, in the rented hall of the INCA [826, Edmonton Trail, NE, Calgary] at 2-4pm. This fall season we started topic of “ The yoga sutras of Patanjali” for discussion. ALL are WECOME to participate in these meetings.Books are available at these meetings. Home services [such as scripture readings,worship etc.,] are also available especially to our seniors ,on request. Membership: The yearly membership fee is $30.00 per family. The donations are welcome and the Tax receipts are issued. Future Plan: The society, jointly with Sri Murugan, INCA and Bengali Association, purchased about forty acres of lands and the necessary requirements to secure the rezoning of this farm land [ MD Rocky View],is in progress. Additional Program: In the year 2006, the project co-ordinator of the VSC Mr. Biren Dasbiswas along with the volunteers [mainly Youths] of the society, cooked & served one day lunch to The Mustard Seed (Calgary) Street Ministry". The VSC will be continuing the same Seed-Programme in the month of December of this year of 2007.
